This album is a compilation unique to Argentina. It borrows the cover art from the UK Best of 1971 but is subtly re-named Top of the Pops 72
(no 'Best of') reflecting the fact that it came out after the new year.
The cover has been imperfectly re-touched to accommodate the alteration
(see scan).
The song titles have been translated into Spanish alongside the English.
The contents include sevaral recordings which are different to those issued in the UK - and one of them, whether by accident or design is in fact the original hit recording! The track in question is "Friends" - which is not the song on UK volume 9, which was in fact a hit for UK group Arrival, but the original recording of a different hit by Elton John, as included in the 1971 film and spin-off LP of the same name.
Four others are from an unknown source, possibly other budget albums. They are all markedly different to the current Top of the Pops versions, generally recorded 'stiff' with thinner background arrangements. The tracks in question are: "Is This The Way To Amarillo"; "American Pie"; "Baby I'm A-Want You"; "Son of my Father".
The Fermata office clearly went out of their way to assemble this album. From Top of the Pops they even troubled to obtain rare tracks, requisitioning "Theme From Shaft" and "Samson and Delilah" from Euro 2 and 3 respectively. Neither of these was officially released in the UK discography.
As with all Argentinean releases, the album is pressed in mono. The corresponding UK cuts were released in stereo.
