When They Was Fab: A Tribute to the Solo Beatles (702822) - 2002

Comments: This was issued as a partner CD to The Long and Winding Road, with which it was simultaneously issued. An attempt to exploit a successful idea, this disc gathered solo hits from all four former group members, although the only one with a consistent chart presence throughout the 1970s was McCartney - who therefore accounts for almost half the set.
The cover was based on Let It Be and even had the detail of placing Paul against a red background, as on the Beatles' earlier sleeve. (Assuming of course it is Paul; it's rather hard to tell!)
The rest of the packaging was virtually identical to The Long And Winding Road with sleeve notes having just tracks and titles amended when mentioned in passing. The album title alludes to a late George Harrison hit, When We Was Fab, which took a nostalgic view of his Beatles years, but came out far too late to have been recorded by the Top of the Poppers, and consequently doesn't feature here.
This CD may have been re-issued, like The Long and Winding Road. However, whereas the re-issue of The Long and Winding Road had been on the Exceed label, the evidence we have suggests an alternative edition of this album on Pickwick (rather than Hallmark, as shown above). Intriguingly, the Pickwick edition was seen for sale from a trader in New Zealand, opening up the possibility that it was actually manufactured and released there...
