South Africa
Top of the Pops was issued to some unknown extent in South Africa, although researching the matter is difficult. The principal problem is that from the front, South African LPs appear identical to the UK editions; one has to see the details on the back of the cover to be sure.
On the two 1970s pressings we have seen, the label logos on the back are changed, and they have the slogan, "Sole distributors Gramophone Record Co. Ltd." at the bottom (instead of "A product of Pickwick International Inc. (G.B.) Ltd...") - which is to say, the South African office of CBS. They also have a credit for the South African printer, Interpak.
One later edition is also known - a compilation which is quite possibly the last overseas example ever made!
We hope that more South African pressings will be located in due course. The country certainly had a keen interest in cover version albums - mfp issued about 70 in their "Springbok" series alone, stretching from 1971 into the mid-1980s!
