Sleeve notes:
Welcome to the 'Pop' scene, here we present a wonderful bunch of 'Pop' goodies. All the songs on this record are 'Chart-Busters' and we take great pleasure in reproducing them for you using the swinging-est bunch of talent on the scene. Switch on and we dare you to try and SIT through both sides. |
Comments: Top of the Pops began its account with this mono LP. (The rest of the series would be in stereo.) The cover model has half her cut away, leaving an improbable gap to the left of her neck. (Check the cover of The Best of “69” (!) where you can find her peeking out of the corner but still largely intact.) This cover design was created by Bill Graham, and would become iconic, remaining unchanged throughout Top of the Pops's history and acting as a standard for all the other covers albums to emulate.
In the sleeve notes, the writer has a little dig at the rival series Chartbusters on the Marble Arch label.

Pictured left is a UK album on the little-noted Uni-Zel label. The album does not have a title. It contains no fewer than nine recordings from Top of the Pops volume 1, and was released at the same time. Amazingly, the LP is in stereo, and is the only place these tracks can be heard that way! The album credits M. Zackariya as the producer - it is not clear why. |
