Sleeve notes:

Never fear Pop Fans - your anxious waiting hasn’t been in vain, for here at last is the newest and swingingest Top of the Pops from Pickwick! I think, judging from your past reactions that we have come up with an absolutely flop proof recipe for sheer entertainment and listening pleasure so I am going to let you into a little secret and tell you how it’s done.

Recipe for Top of the Pops

INGREDIENTS:
Top of the Poppers
Latest chart busters
Talent and technical knowhow
Creativity and imagination

METHOD:
Combine the above ingredients and blend until mixture is the right consistency, making sure that the hits are taken red hot from the charts. Leave to set in recording studio for a few hours.

RESULT:
Dynamite!

Well, there you have it - the original tried and tested recipe guaranteed to work every time.

Happy listening!

Comments: The SHM catalogue numbers were fast approaching 1000, which was apparently an unacceptable line to cross, so Hallmark abandoned the Top of the Pops allocation in steps of five (980, 985, 990, 995 etc) and began bunching them up with SHM 996 so as to put off the inevitable. One wonders why it mattered so much...

Also notabe is the inclusion of an illustration on the back. This would be followed by several similar efforts during the following couple of years, which would almost entirely replace conventional sleeve notes by 1979.
