Italy "Lady Bump" (single) (N 5090 106)
This single appeared in Italy on the Universal International Music
label, probably in 1975 although it may be a little later. It is not clear who recorded the
two tracks; "Hallelujah Day" was covered by the Poppers for volume 31 in
1973, but they never recorded a version of "Lady Bump", which was not a
hit until 1975.
The primary interest in this record is the sleeve. The image used is instantly recognisable from Best of Top of the Pops 1974.
In fact the whole single, from the cover to the name of the act, is one of the most brazen cash-ins in the history of covers recording. The original hit was by Penny McLean (a member of the group Silver Convention), whereas this cover version is by a singer called Betty McNolan, almost certainly a name created for this single only.
And the cover design, TOTP photograph aside, is a copyright-challenging duplicate of the real thing, which had appeared in Europe on the Jupiter Records label!
